3D Printing and the Construction Industry

3D printing is a transformative technology that has the potential to revolutionize the construction industry.

They are already being used to create 3D models, prototypes and small, non-structural building components such as landscaping bricks or decorative elements.

Researchers are now experimenting with different types of 3D printers, fabrication techniques and potential applications including:

  • a variety of raw materials including recycled plastic, bioplastics, concrete and a synthetic “stone-like” material created from a combination of sand and chemicals
  • fabrication of reinforced concrete beams; and
  • direct printing on-site or in factories.

This article explores the implications of this technology for the home building industry and looks at the Canal House project currently being printed in Amsterdam.
